Swine Flu

Swine flu is sweeping the country and there is no stopping its advance. If you are pregnant then you will be doctorin the age group most susceptible to this strain - many older people will have some resistance having lived through similar epidemics like the Hong Kong flu of the 70s.

Are pregnant women more at risk? Yes, as your body's natural defences are lower while you are pregnant.

Have any pregnant mums died from swine flu? Yes, a 39 year old died recently just after giving birth prematurely. But she had severe underlying health problems which may have been exacerbabted by the swine flu. There was also a 38 year old who died but she too had serious underlying health problems. her baby, born 11 weeks premature, also died but not from swine flu.

We are planning a baby. Should I wait until the pandemic has run its course? The National Childbirth Trust believes you should; but the Royal College of General Practitioners and the Government say this is scaremongering and advises couples to continue with their plans.

Can I do anything to avoid catching this? The Government suggests you stay indoors away from other people. Whilst this may be sensible in theory, in practice it isn't really possible, especially if you have young children. If you have had contact with an infected person you can be prescribed Relenza, an antiviral drug that is taken through an inhaler so it should not affect your unborn baby.
